Catalogus Vve. Hasslauer (Gambier), Givet (Fa). 1868

This catalogue includes a total of 660 different pipes, including those not illustrated. Stemmed pipes are occasionally shown with their full stems, but more often only a portion of the stem is depicted, indicated by a break line. When the end of the stem differed in design from the visible section, it is sometimes illustrated separately (for example, no. 612 Palmier verni). Figurative stemmed pipes are referred to as fantaisies, while exceptionally small figurative pipes are, for the first time, described as mignonnettes. This catalogue also introduces several new products by Gambier, such as the “Taxile” pipes, pipes à réservoir (with a detachable bowl), and the “Crême Gambier” pipes. A number of pipes in this catalogue depict Napoleon III and his consort Eugénie (nos. 840 Empereur pt., 842 Empereur gr., 844 Impératrice gr., 926 Impératrice pt., and 211 Fantaisie Impératrice). The popularity of these pipes likely declined sharply shortly after the publication of the catalogue, following France’s defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, initiated by Napoleon III. These models do not reappear in later catalogues. The much-discussed bowl no. 800, “Le Christ,” is likewise illustrated only in this catalogue and subsequently disappears from the range.
