Summary

Large-format pipes exert a particular attraction on both collectors and researchers. This fascination is not only due to their exceptional size, but especially by the uncertainty about their original function. In the literature, they are generally referred to as presentation pipes, although terms such as display pipes or shop pipes are also used. Recently, a fine example has once again come to light that merits closer examination. Until around 2003, this pipe was part of the collection of H.J.E. van Beuningen, entrepreneur and passionate collector of historical objects of use. Together with his wife, he built up an extensive collection, which was ultimately donated to Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
