Catalogue P. Goedewaagen & Son - Gouda ca 1890

Original manufacturer’s catalogue of the firm P. Goedewaagen & Zoon in Gouda. On the cover, a handwritten label with the text: “Goudsche pijpen P.G. en Zoon”, and on the title page: “Aarden-tabaks & sigaren-pijpen fabriek P. Goedewaagen & Zoon, Gouda (Holland), registered trademarks, Export.” The catalogue contains 41 (unnumbered) pages with illustrations of 353 different models. A number of models were also available in various stem lengths, bringing the total assortment of the firm at that time to approximately 375 pipes.

This is the oldest known catalogue of P. Goedewaagen & Zoon. On the title page, the most recent medal awarded to the firm is shown, namely the one received at the World Exhibition in Antwerp in 1885. The medal awarded in Batavia in 1898 is not yet included. Goedewaagen began issuing catalogues in 1890. This copy likely dates from that year or was printed shortly thereafter. This is evident, among other things, from the illustration of the Jubilee pipe, dated 12 May 1889, which was produced on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the reign of King Willem III. This pipe (Series 3, no. 72) would have remained in production only until the early 1890s at most.

This bound catalogue was accompanied by the price list shown alongside, a double-sided printed sheet which, based on the prices listed, likely dates from the period between 1890 and 1900. Just as the above catalogue is the oldest known example from Goedewaagen, the same applies to this price list.
