Catalogue Franz Demons (Ger) added

Catalogue of the Rheinische Pfeifen-Fabrik of Franz Demond in Vallendar, just north of Koblenz on the eastern bank of the Rhine. The catalogue comprises 14 pages and features 117 different models. Its title, “Rheinische Pfeifen-Fabrik gegründet 1816. Franz Demond in Vallendar am Rhein,” is printed in red, gold, and black ink.

Franz Demond belonged to an established family of pipe makers. The earliest pipe maker of this family in the Westerwald, Peter Martin Demond, settled in Höhr in 1719, possibly originating from Cologne. It is not known when the Demond family established itself in Vallendar; this may have occurred in 1816, the year of the company’s foundation as indicated on the catalogue. Nothing further is known about Franz Demond. The catalogue suggests that the enterprise operated independently and was not reliant on the so-called Verlagssystem.

The presence of pipes bearing portraits of Emperor Wilhelm I, Wilhelm II, and Friedrich III—who briefly reigned as German Emperor during the so-called Year of the Three Emperors in 1888—suggests that the catalogue likely dates from the late nineteenth century.
